Care Instructions
Care Instructions
For the initial wash, use a dish detergent and hot water to remove spinning oils. In depth directions and a video can be found on our washing instructions page.
For subsequent washings, hand wash gently in cool or lukewarm water using a mild wool wash.
Rinse carefully, gently press out excess water, and lay flat to dry. Reshape while damp.
We recommend washing and drying a gauge swatch before beginning your project, as the yarn will soften and bloom substantially during finishing.

Incredibly soft, lightweight, and warm, our 100% Mongolian cashmere is a beautiful choice for projects you'll want to wear for years. Sourced from traditional herding communities across Mongolia, our cashmere combines the exceptional softness of fine undercoat fibers with the comfort and warmth that make this fiber so special.
Perfect for sweaters, scarves, hats, and anything worn close to the skin, it creates a beautifully soft fabric that becomes even more luxurious after washing and finishing.
Herders to Home
Discover the people and processes behind our yarn.
Every skein of ULA+LIA yarn begins in the Mongolian countryside.
For generations, nomadic herding families have raised their animals across Mongolia's vast grasslands, deserts, and mountains. These animals produce some of the world's most remarkable natural fibers, adapted to the country's famously harsh climate.
We work with herding cooperatives and local producers to bring these fibers from Mongolia's countryside to knitters around the world.
From the collection of raw fiber to the finished skein of yarn, we're proud to share the people, places, and processes behind what we make.
Herders to Home.
The Extraordinary Softness of Mongolian Cashmere
Cashmere is prized for its incredible softness, warmth, and light weight. The fine undercoat that helps goats survive Mongolia's harsh winters also makes a beautiful fiber for knitting.
Our Mongolian cashmere creates an exceptionally soft, lightweight fabric with beautiful drape and natural warmth. Perfect for sweaters, scarves, and accessories worn close to the skin, it's a luxurious fiber that becomes even softer and fuller after washing and finishing.
We source our cashmere through long-standing relationships with herding cooperatives across Mongolia, helping us maintain quality and traceability while supporting the communities who produce these remarkable fibers.
Find Your Perfect Fiber
Every natural fiber has something special to offer. Some are softer, some have more drape, and some are better suited to everyday wear.
Use this guide to compare the characteristics of our four core Mongolian fibers and find the right yarn for your next project.
Cashmere
Exceptional Softness
Our softest fiber, beautifully light and warm with lovely drape. Perfect for sweaters, scarves, and accessories worn close to the skin.
Yak Wool
Softness with Resilience
A wonderfully soft fiber that creates a dense, cozy fabric with excellent warmth, structure, and wear resistance.
Baby Camel Wool
Soft with Beautiful Drape
Exceptionally soft and warm, with flowing drape that's especially lovely for scarves, shawls, and relaxed garments.
Sheep Wool
Soft, Structured, and Durable
Specially dehaired for softness while retaining the structure and wear resistance that make wool so versatile.
The Difference After Washing
Our yarns are sold with spinning oils still present from the manufacturing process. These oils help protect the fibers during production, but they also affect how the yarn looks and feels. Washing them out makes a substantial difference, allowing the fibers to relax, soften, and bloom into their finished state.
You have two options: wash the yarn before knitting or wait until your project is complete. Some knitters prefer to wash their yarn first so they can enjoy its full softness while working. Others prefer to leave the spinning oils in place until the end, as they provide additional protection and help the yarn withstand the wear and tear of knitting, particularly when a project involves a lot of ripping out and reknitting.
In fact, even our finest cashmere can hold up remarkably well through repeated frogging and reknitting while the spinning oils are still present.
Whichever method you prefer, washing is an essential part of bringing out the true character of our yarns. The difference in softness, fullness, and overall appearance can be dramatic.
We always recommend knitting and washing a gauge swatch before starting your project, especially for fitted garments, so you can see how the finished fabric will look and feel. Please see the indepth instructions and washing videos in our FAQ.

Pre/Post Washing
From Our Yarn to Finished Garments
We don't just produce yarn at ULA+LIA. We also use our own fibers to design and make a wide range of knitted clothing, from sweaters and cardigans to hats, scarves, and other accessories. These aren't just craft yarns! They are also made with industrial production in mind.
Working with everything from cashmere and yak to camel and our specially dehaired sheep wool, we create garments that showcase the unique qualities of each fiber. We also hand-dye many of our yarns, experimenting with different colors and combinations to create pieces that are uniquely our own.
Making clothing with our own yarn gives us firsthand experience with how each fiber knits, drapes, and feels when worn. It's also a great way to show you what's possible with the yarn you're buying.

I am currently knitting a sweater in it and it is some of the softest cashmere I have felt. The smell was a little strong at first but dissipated quickly
Hi Susan, we're delighted to hear you love the softness of our cashmere yarn! Enjoy knitting your sweater, and thank you for sharing your experience.
Thick and soft after you wash out the oils. It’s very dense and washes out beautifully to show the softness of the Mongolian cashmere. I practice multiple patterns to make my husband the perfect hat.
Hi there! We're so glad you love the softness and quality of our cashmere yarn. It sounds like a wonderful project for your husband’s hat. Happy knitting!
This yarn is so lovely to knit with. My swatch blocked beautifully. Excited to finish my garment and wear with pride!

I have just started to swatch with the DK Cashmere (undyed cream white) and it is amazing. Sturdy, not at all splitty, soft but firm. I am looking forward to see how it looks and feels after finishing.
Also, incredibly fast shipping!

My cream undyed cashmere is a wonderful cool off-white. I appreciate the very specific washing instructions included and can’t wait to find the perfect project.
Glad you like it! Have fun knitting (and washing) it up!
Exceeded my expectations. This is the greatest yarn I have ever had the privilege to use. I could not be happier with my purchase and I hope to buy more soon!
Thank you Mary, glad to hear you liked working with it so much!
The oxblood cashmere yarn is such a deep and rich color. Plus it is so soft and scrumptious to knit. I easily washed out the spinning oil per the wash instructions. Some of the red dye came out, but only on that initial wash and not during subsequent blocking of the finished item.
Hi Cassie, glad the washing process went smoothly, it's crazy how much of a difference it makes. Thank you for sharing a picture, it looks lovely!
I 100% recommend this yarn! I loved that it was so light weight fingering without being a chainette structure . It’s perfect for scarves . You can knit 2 full Sophie scarves with 1 of these skeins (the large size too)! This color is a very deep hot pink that almost looks red, but it’s actually pink.
I researched several yarn options and finally landed on Ula + Lia, and it did not disappoint. I also noticed that it doesn’t seem to pill easily either, even after I blocked it.
I can’t wait to order more of their yarn in the future !
Thank you Olivia, the scarf looks awesome!
Love this yarn! The color is not too bright, it's so so soft and I can't wait to knit with it! I bought one during the 2024 Kickstarter and had to get another to be sure I had enough for the perfect project. It was shipped really fast. I actually got it sooner than I expected. I will be buying more!
Happy to hear you like it, and nice job with the photo! The color looks accurate, I had a difficult time getting the robin's egg and azalea to come out accurately. And thanks to my mom for the fast shipping!
This yarn is amazing. I saw the note that said that the spinning oils might still be in the yarn and I would need to wash it to see the benefits of the yarn. Oh my goodness! This yarn is so soft and luscious after washing! I would love to use it again and again!
Thank you for the review Kathy, and for sharing the photo. It looks lovely!
I made a lovely hat with this yarn. The color is beautiful and bright - it makes me smile! This yarn is also so incredibly soft. I was quite surprised to see someone say it wasn't in their review, and I wonder if they did not wash the yarn first to remove the spinning oils. I cannot stress enough how important that step is. It is so soft and squishy once it's properly washed. I wish I could have gotten my hands on some of the smaller weight yarns in this color to make some sweaters for my daughter and me.
The hat looks great, I'm happy you liked the yarn! It was a popular color, so it's not impossible we do another batch of it soon.
I started to knit the sweater with it and like it so far. Also, I liked the communication with Jon at ula-lia, how fast and efficiently he responded.
Thank you Vera! Looks great so far, hopefully you'll still have some cold weather by the time it finishes up!
After washing the yarn several times to get the spinning oils out, I’m now knitting a swatch for a sweater. The yarn is lovely, wonderful to knit and so soft! Can’t wait until my sweater is finished until then it’ll be a treat knitting it!
I'm glad it opened up nicely after the wash. Goodluck with the sweater!
Mid-project with this yarn, but so far it is very pleasant to knit with and the color was accurate to the picture online. I did pre-wash the skeins as I read reviews mentioning the spinning oils and that was a bit different than i’ve ever treated cashmere but it went well and I can’t wait to see the finished product after a final washing and see how it wears.!
I'm glad the washing experience wasn't too difficult! I've never felted an item and am quite rough with my yarns and wash in hotter water than most as well. I hope you enjoy knitting it up!
Long time Ula+Lia yarn user, first time trying the DK weight. The squishiness! The ease to knit with! The stitch definition in the finished product! It beat expectations set by the fingering weights. I see more DK in my future.
The project turned out great! I hope it gets a ton of wear during the colder months
Very soft yarn!!! I am happy and excited to work with this yarn! I am knitting a sweater now. A few years ago I ordered yak yarn here and I love my sweater. This is a picture of my yak sweater. I believe my cashmere sweater will be beautiful and comfortable as well.
If you loved the yak I'm sure you're going to love the cashmere too. The sweater looks perfect, thank you for sharing!
I almost completed my project. This yarn (fingering) is soft and is a very good choice for kids.
The colour is very pretty and the thickness of the yarn are perfect for a light dress, sweater, polo. Jacket will be good with DK or double fingering.
My granddaughter liked it a lot when I asked her to try it to see how it fits and estimate the length.
Thank you for sharing the picture, it looks great! I'm very happy to hear you are enjoying the yarn!
First bought Mongolian cashmere in a store in my area.
When visited website, discovered more options.
It’s beautiful: both fingering and DK. Some patterns will look gorgeous if you knit with fingering, better than DK. The feel is about the same.
This specific color is very pretty for anything: hats, headbands, gloves, mittens, sweater. Mostly knit for my grandchildren. Gloves and headband made for my daughter, she loves them. quality is much better than if you buy cashmere in a store, it will last much longer and you can fix it.
This online store offers all that some people might need, including myself.
Also very good yak and camel natural and undyed.
The hat looks great, thank you for sharing!

Great yarn, very soft!
Thank you!
It’s so lovely to work with, and even better when finished and blocked.
I’m making beanies for my girls and their husbands for Christmas. It is a luxury item for sure.
Happy it met your expectations, I'm sure they will make awesome gifts!
