Care Instructions
Care Instructions
For the initial wash, use a dish detergent and hot water to remove spinning oils. In depth directions and a video can be found on our washing instructions page.
For subsequent washings, hand wash gently in cool or lukewarm water using a mild wool wash.
Rinse carefully, gently press out excess water, and lay flat to dry. Reshape while damp.
We recommend washing and drying a gauge swatch before beginning your project, as the yarn will soften and bloom substantially during finishing.

Soft, warm, and beautifully rich in texture, our 100% Mongolian yak wool is one of our favorite natural fibers. Sourced from yaks raised by herding families in Mongolia's rugged countryside, this remarkable fiber offers a wonderful combination of softness, warmth, and durability.
Yak wool produces a cozy, comfortable fabric with a lovely natural drape, making it an excellent choice for sweaters, cardigans, scarves, and winter accessories. Its distinctive character makes every project feel a little different from traditional sheep wool.
Herders to Home
Discover the people and processes behind our yarn.
Every skein of ULA+LIA yarn begins in the Mongolian countryside.
For generations, nomadic herding families have raised their animals across Mongolia's vast grasslands, deserts, and mountains. These animals produce some of the world's most remarkable natural fibers, adapted to the country's famously harsh climate.
We work with herding cooperatives and local producers to bring these fibers from Mongolia's countryside to knitters around the world.
From the collection of raw fiber to the finished skein of yarn, we're proud to share the people, places, and processes behind what we make.
Herders to Home.
Discover Mongolian Yak Wool
Raised in some of Mongolia's most rugged landscapes, yaks develop a fine, insulating undercoat that helps protect them through harsh winters.
Our yak wool is beautifully soft and warm, creating a dense, cozy knitted fabric with a wonderful natural character. Compared with our cashmere and camel, it has a more structured feel, making it a lovely choice for comfortable garments and winter accessories.
With its balance of softness, warmth, and wear resistance, yak wool is one of our favorite fibers for knitwear that's both luxurious and practical.
Find Your Perfect Fiber
Every natural fiber has something special to offer. Some are softer, some have more drape, and some are better suited to everyday wear.
Use this guide to compare the characteristics of our four core Mongolian fibers and find the right yarn for your next project.
Cashmere
Exceptional Softness
Our softest fiber, beautifully light and warm with lovely drape. Perfect for sweaters, scarves, and accessories worn close to the skin.
Yak Wool
Softness with Resilience
A wonderfully soft fiber that creates a dense, cozy fabric with excellent warmth, structure, and wear resistance.
Baby Camel Wool
Soft with Beautiful Drape
Exceptionally soft and warm, with flowing drape that's especially lovely for scarves, shawls, and relaxed garments.
Sheep Wool
Soft, Structured, and Durable
Specially dehaired for softness while retaining the structure and wear resistance that make wool so versatile.
The Difference After Washing
Our yarns are sold with spinning oils still present from the manufacturing process. These oils help protect the fibers during production, but they also affect how the yarn looks and feels. Washing them out makes a substantial difference, allowing the fibers to relax, soften, and bloom into their finished state.
You have two options: wash the yarn before knitting or wait until your project is complete. Some knitters prefer to wash their yarn first so they can enjoy its full softness while working. Others prefer to leave the spinning oils in place until the end, as they provide additional protection and help the yarn withstand the wear and tear of knitting, particularly when a project involves a lot of ripping out and reknitting.
In fact, even our finest cashmere can hold up remarkably well through repeated frogging and reknitting while the spinning oils are still present.
Whichever method you prefer, washing is an essential part of bringing out the true character of our yarns. The difference in softness, fullness, and overall appearance can be dramatic.
We always recommend knitting and washing a gauge swatch before starting your project, especially for fitted garments, so you can see how the finished fabric will look and feel. Please see the indepth instructions and washing videos in our FAQ.

Pre/Post Washing
From Our Yarn to Finished Garments
We don't just produce yarn at ULA+LIA. We also use our own fibers to design and make a wide range of knitted clothing, from sweaters and cardigans to hats, scarves, and other accessories. These aren't just craft yarns! They are also made with industrial production in mind.
Working with everything from cashmere and yak to camel and our specially dehaired sheep wool, we create garments that showcase the unique qualities of each fiber. We also hand-dye many of our yarns, experimenting with different colors and combinations to create pieces that are uniquely our own.
Making clothing with our own yarn gives us firsthand experience with how each fiber knits, drapes, and feels when worn. It's also a great way to show you what's possible with the yarn you're buying.

I couldn't decide which yarn to try, so I ordered one each! I'm crocheting a long-sleeve top using them all. Cashmere, Camel, Yak, in DK, and Wool in fingering. For the fingering weight I will add a strand of suri lace! Beautiful yarn!
We're thrilled to hear you love the yarn and your creative project. Happy crocheting, and thank you for sharing your experience!
Just finished my second sweater with this yarn and am very happy. The color is deep, the fabric is soft and sturdy, and the whole knitting process was pure joy! My first sweater of this yarn shows some pilling, but it's not too bad. Will definitely get more in the future for more lovely projects!
It looks great, thank you for sharing, hard to beat a yak wool cardi!
I have been buying yarn from ULA+LIA for several years. I prefer the yak yarn. It's warm, soft and not itchy, and a pleasure to knit with.
This is a great websitr to purchase yarn, they are very reputable. Their prices are fair and the quality of the yarn is excellent.
Thank you for the words and for sharing the project, it looks awesome! It's always great to see what the yarn turns into
This 100% Yak DK in Evergreen is exactly what I wanted. If this green were a fragrance, it would be frosty pine trees right after a rain. Just the right shade of green - not too black, not too yellow, not too blue. The yak wool feels amazing and I bet the bloom on it is going to be crazy beautiful. Also, just the most subtle sheen - sigh. So glad I got to join in on the adventure and will order more yarn the next time around. (Photo taken under my Ott light bc the sun has already gone down here)
Thank you for sharing! I'm happy to have the next version of green yak back in stock. We started with hunter green a few years ago and now have the evergreen.
I just finished my sweater with your baby yak yarn that I picked up at my local yarn store and am so impressed. I just dont want to take it off! I love the rugged look yet soft feel of the yarn. I will order more.
The sweater looks great, thank you for the review and the picture! Glad to hear you're enjoying the yak wool.
I love this yarn, in this weight. I’m knitting a lace cardigan, and it has a light halo while still maintaining beautiful stitch definition. Incredibly soft and durable! It feels more like a heavy DK/light worsted yarn, and character changes with needle size—I’m using a US size 6, getting 20 stitches per 4 inches and am happy with the character of the fabric. I am sure I could easily go up a few needles sizes and have a gorgeous, shimmery, fluid shawl if I wanted. Wonderful!
Thank you for sharing a picture, it looks wonderful! I'm glad you're happy with the yarn!
Wonderful yarn, with amazing drape. I wash and dry mine before crochet with it. It has such an earthy smell as a work with it too. It's a 10/10 in my opinion!
The color is gorgeous, and the yak fiber is an absolute dream. It’s lovely to knit with, but the real magic happens after you’ve finished knitting and blocked your project. The yarn literally blooms when washed, becoming incredibly soft—like cashmere. Truly remarkable!
Hi Marci, we're so happy to hear you love the yak wool yarn! It’s wonderful to know it blooms beautifully after blocking. Thanks for sharing your experience!
I’m a beginner knitter, and I decided I wanted to treat myself to some really nice yarn for once. I’m so glad I did! The quality is beautiful, it feels amazing to work with, and I absolutely love it. I can’t wait to try their cashmere next!
Thank you! and congrats on starting the journey!
Great pic if you’re getting into using more “exotic” fibers, works and feels like wool but has different characteristics. Very nice and plush, will be buying more.
That's about how I describe it too, glad you enjoyed working with it!
So soft and nice to knit with after washing that I have rather ordered more than use other DK yarn from my stash …
I know you'll have another on the way soon, thank you for sharing all of your projects in our Ravelry group!
I bought a skein to see if it would be suitable for a larger project. While I adore cashmere, I don’t like the way it frequently pills and was hoping to find something almost as soft that would wear better (bonus if it’s more affordable!). I pre-washed the skein according to the instructions to get rid of the spinning oils, and the yarn plumped up nicely. So far I’ve only swatched with it, but the fabric has a lovely hand and does really feel like it would wear well. The natural warm gray color is beautiful and would go with pretty much everything. I think I’ve found my cashmere replacement!
Thank you for the words! Everything will pill eventually, but I do think we have a really good blend between our softness and durability, where generally speaking those can be a bit at odds with each other. The warm gray and almond/tan base seem to be the softest/most supple, so I think we're on the same page with feel and love with our cashmere!
I do love the feel of yak fiber! This has such a nice twist, it will be wonderful to work with! the mulberry purple is so deep and rich - it's destined to be a tee of some form. I haven't knit it yet, but it will be hitting the needles soon!
Hi Patricia, thank you for your lovely review! We're delighted you love the yak fiber and the beautiful color. We can't wait to see your finished project!
I made 2 swatches.one with US 4 wood needles and the other with US 2.5 metal needles. The yarn was easy on my hands to knit because it was not slippery on the needles. It is a relaxing yarn to knit with. The swatch using the larger needle filled in the space between stitches when washed, and the swatch on the smaller needles still had a nice feel and drape.
The platinum gray color is amazing and I have a pattern picked out for this yarn. I don't mind washing the spinning oil out, because the price is very reasonable for a luxury yarn. The yarn shipped when promised and there were no issues with the delivery or packaging.
I hope there will continue to be yak yarn available and would like to expand my color choices next time.
Hi Cami, thank you for sharing your wonderful experience! We're thrilled you enjoy knitting with our yak yarn and appreciate the color and quality. We look forward to offering more colors in the future. Happy knitting!
This yarn is soft and squishy. The color is the most incredible purple I've ever soon.
The mulberry is a classic in the yak for sure, thank you Linda!
I hate to say how exquisite this yarn is because I want to keep this yarn a secret so there is more for me ;-))
Thank you Sherry, glad you like it! I'll try to keep some extra laying around ;)
It's so so soft! I have two projects planned with the yarn - one solid gray shawl and one striped shawl with the platinum gray and the purple. Mmmmm! The yarn was an early birthday present and thank you from another fiber artist who visited for 4.5 days. Aren't I lucky?
Great gift indeed! Mixing with the mulberry sounds like a good choice, the naturals and the dyed items in the same fiber always seem to go together great. Have fun with the project!
I am surprised at the softness and even consistency of the yarn. I am making a small swatch of straight stitching flat. The stitches are even without distortion, and the yarn is soft but not slippery. I think this yarn would make a beautiful lace item or could be carried with another yarn or held double. This yarn has a lot of possibilities, I wish I had bought a few more skeins of it.
Definitely a lot of possibilities. Doubling it will be slightly thicker than fingering weight (lace is 2 plies, fingering is 3 plies, DK is 6). Thank you for the review and have fun finding a project!
I love supporting Ula+Lia and the marvelous yarn, animals, herders, dyers, spinners and all who make this wonderful yarn. It is easy to knit, has a marvelous hand, works well with cables or lace. My favorite fabric from this is stockinette stitch—so smooth and touchable!! It’s probably the only way I’ll ever be able to touch a real yak!! Thank you Jon, et al!!😊
Thank you Mary Beth! Have fun with all the soft stuff!
Great quality yarn and shipped quickly!
Good to hear it got to you fast, have fun knitting it up!
I haven't had the chance to use this yet, but the color is just as I imagined it! I can't wait to use it! (will upgrade to 5 star if it works out as I expect it will)
I'm sure it will! Good luck finding the right project for it!
I knit myself a sweater several years ago with the chocolate brown yak yarn and I love that sweater. It is soft, warn and has very little pilling. Now I have several colors of the yak yarn and plan to knit myself a stranded yoke sweater.
Sounds like a great idea for a project, I hope all the colors come together as planned!
I picked up several skeins of the yak on Kickstarter, and am just now getting around to knit it into a sweater. Sadly, the pattern I chose had a very loose neck, which doesn’t work for me. And it had cables, which didn’t work with the darkness of the yarn, and I kept changing my mind about features I wanted in the sweater. So I ended up ripping parts of the yoke 7 times. I’ve had wool yarn break down after ripping just a few times. But the yak still looks brand new, and it’s holding its shape beautifully, and it’s so soft and cozy! A total win!
Sorry to hear about all the frogging, but happy that the yarn held up well. Hope you can find another pattern that you're happy with!
